Since its inception as Central Blair Electric in 1959, Blair Companies has expanded into 21 diverse businesses, including the Image Group with signs, fixtures, lighting and architectural imaging; the Development Group with electrical, construction, coal resources and real estate; and the Venture Group, with stakes in a wide variety of local businesses. Training

Health Insurance
Eligible to join the first day of the month after 90 days of employment.  Blair shares cost of premium for family or individual coverage.

Life Insurance
Eligible to join the first day of the month after 90 days of employment.  Company funded life insurance, with the option to sign up for additional insurance paid for by the employee.  Includes spouse and children also.

Flexible Spending Account
Eligible to join the first day of the month after 90 days of employment.  Reimburses employees for qualifying healthcare and/or dependent care expenses with pre-tax dollars.

Paid Leave
Blair provides Paid Leave to regular, full-time and part-time employees based upon their length of service with the Company.  Employees may use accrued Paid Leave for vacation, personal business or time off for a personal health condition in accordance with established policy.

Paid Holidays
Eligible after 90 days of employment.  Up to 9 paid holidays for regular, full time and part time employees.

Retirement Plan
Eligible after one year of employment. Employees can contribute up to 15% of salary. Plan includes various, self-directed investment options.  Blair matches 1:3 of the first 6% of salary contributed.  Eligible to participate after one year of employment.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

PAINTER
REPORTS TO:  Area Supervisor
LOCATION:  5107 Kissell Avenue, Altoona PA  16601

GENERAL:
  • Observe all safety rules and policies at all times with materials and tools.
  • Receive and follow instructions from team leaders and supervisors.
  • Maintain quality standards as well as time standards.                                                  
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas.
  • Notify Supervisor of any discrepancies on all internal company documents.       
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:     
            

Training
  • Must be able to accurately read, understand, and demonstrate how to use a tape measure on materials used daily.
  • Operate basic hand and power tools.
  • Read, understand, and follow print and book job information.
  • Assist painters with hanging and or wiping out faces and cabinets. 
  • Organize and care for finished product by using proper handling and staging techniques.
  • Mask signs for multiple color paint applications with attention paid to material used and dry time of previously applied pants.
  • Load paint carts and storage racks of painted and finished products.
  • Disposal of all unusable finishes, paints, and thinners in an appropriate manner with strict adherence to company safety policy on transporting, storage, and disposal of such chemicals.
  • Transporting completed products to appropriate “Team” areas.
 Certified
  • Check product against print for accuracy and quality.
  • Review pre-painted product with Area Supervisor to understand and address questions of quality, process, and customer expectations before proceeding to paint.
  • Mix and load paints in spray equipment for daily work load with attention paid to shelf life, accelerators, and hardeners.
  • Understand and use multiple types of paint such as epoxies, enamels, and urethanes.
  • Apply components to paint such as catalysts, accelerators, reducers, and fish-eye removers. Understand their effect.
  • Operate and maintain spray guns. Understand fluid and air adjustment knobs. Maintain parts such as baffle seals, packing nuts, needles, and fluid nozzles.
  • Operate and maintain spray booths including bake oven.
  • Ensure product is transferred to next department clean and complete.
  • Understand and apply basic spray gun control techniques such as following straight lines, gun distance from product, avoiding pendulum ”wristing”, and follow through.
 Senior
  • Use and spray all types of materials such as aluminum, steel, polycarbonates, and composite materials.
  • Understand and apply paints in a manner suitable to meet customer and company expectations.
  • Spray translucent faces evenly and with good light transmission.
  • Assist and train newer employees by guiding them through mixing and loading equipment.
  • Constantly develop trainees in paint and component identity, usage, and effects of daily products.
  • Use equipment and process issues as a training opportunity for repairing equipment and problem solving with new hires.
  • Maintain a high standard suitable for prototype work.
  • Assist and train newer or less experienced employees in all aspects of the job.
  • Guide less experienced employees on safety and quality principles.
  • Senior and Advanced employees are responsible for conveying any above mentioned discrepancies, as well as ECR/ ECN forms.   
Advanced
  • Show total proficiency with ability to tear down and rebuild spray equipment as well as monitoring wear and tear parts to avoid down time.
  • Assist Area Supervisor in contacting paint suppliers, monitoring current paint inventory and consumption.
  • Monitor assembly floor during and after paint process to insure quality standards are maintained.
  • Be prepared to assume departmental responsibilities and/or leadership role in absence of supervisor.
  • Demonstrate complete ability in testing and applying new paint products and how surrounding environment and processes affect its quality.
  • Must demonstrate good training abilities with new hires as well as understand and achieve daily departmental objectives.
  • Must maintain a batch of control color samples and tested product to avoid field issues in a multi-site environment.
  • Must be able to independently complete a job from start to finish with no supervision.
  • Must be able to interact constructively with project managers and engineering personnel when necessary.
  • Able to paint product at both Fixture and Sign facilities.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT DESCRIPTION:                                                                                                 
  • Manufacturing environment - appropriate safety equipment and precautions required such as safety glasses, face shields, gloves, ear plugs, etc.                     
  • Lifting product up to 50 pounds; Fast-paced work as needed.  Tobacco free facility.
  • Will be working around paints and solvents, must be prepared for strong odors and fumes.  Respirator equipment provided.                                                                                                                                                  
ADDITIONAL NOTES:                                                                                                                    
Mandatory overtime occasionally as production requires.
